For many people, a wedding is the biggest party they will ever plan. And while it is sure to be the happiest day of your life, the planning process leading up to the event can be stressful. There are things you can do to try to prevent some stress, including discussing these things with your professional wedding DJ.

Your Big Songs

Let your DJ know the big choices of music you’ve made – your first dance, your entrance music, your last dance, the bouquet or garter toss song, and so on – as early as possible. Also, decide (and let them know) if you plan to use the whole song or want them to fade it out after a certain amount of time. Telling your DJ early gives them time to plan the evening around those choices.

Name Pronunciation

Especially if you have unusual or uncommon names in your wedding party, give your DJ a pronunciation guide. No one likes having their name mispronounced, so don’t assume that you DJ will look at your wedding party list and know how to say every name correctly.

Your Do-Not-Play List

Make sure that your DJ knows any songs you absolutely don’t want to hear. These can be songs that you absolutely hate but know that someone will request or songs you just don’t think are appropriate for the setting and don’t want your grandma to hear. A good DJ can simply tell people that they don’t have those songs available and leave it at that.

Context For Suggested Songs

While the Do-Not-Play list is vital, it can also be helpful to let your DJ know the context of songs you expect people would request or appreciate hearing. If your family has a tradition of doing the chicken dance at every wedding, this is good info to know going into planning the set list.

If They Should MC

Aside from introducing your wedding party and the major moments of the reception, are you looking for someone to engage your guests and keep the dance floor packed, or just quietly spin music? Most DJs have a natural style, but if you have a preference you need to be clear about it. If you choose a chatty DJ that’s what you’ll get if you don’t tell them you want otherwise.
